How To Do A Christmas Family Worship Night

Doing a Christmas family worship night with our family has been a sweet tradition over the last 4 years or so. I was inspired by a family that intentionally celebrated Jesus in their home, with their immediate and extended family. We decided we wanted to do something similarly!

At the time I’m writing this I’ve got 4 kids ages 7, 6, 3, and 1.5 years old. The format can absolutely be modified based on the ages of your kids and/or family members. Especially when it comes to the role of fire and candles!

Here are the components of our Christmas Family Worship Night:

1. Singing

Now depending on the family you grew up in and your level of talent, the thoughts of singing with your family may be intimidating for you. Even if you feel comfortable singing at church, if you don’t typically sing as a family, it will take some time to get comfortable doing it. But I promise you, it will be worth it! While it’s important to be part of a local church where we worship with our brothers and sisters in Christ, it’s also important for us to worship Jesus within our homes.

This is especially important for parents because our kids need to see us worshiping God. Modeling a love for the Lord is essential for our kids to learn what it looks like to follow Jesus.

You don’t have to be good at singing, I promise. Pull up your favorite Christmas worship album on YouTube or take some time and put one together before your Christmas Family Worship Night. Many of the songs on YouTube have the lyrics displayed for you, so it’s easy to follow along. Phil Wickham’s Christmas album from a few years ago is one of my favorites!

2. Reading the Christmas Story

Typically after singing a few songs we’ll read the Christmas story together. We’ve done this a few different ways. You can divide up the story so each person reads a small section. Or if you have someone who has a great narrator voice (like my grandpa) you can assign them to read the Christmas story. It might be easier to print out the story so everyone has access to it and can follow along or be prepared to read their section. You can find the Christmas story in Matthew 1:18-25 and Luke 2:1-22. The Luke passage is definitely our favorite.

3. Let There Be Light

Much like the way we always light candles at our weekly Sabbath dinner, we love to light candles during our Christmas Family Worship Night. Depending on the age and stage of your family, you may even be able to purchase individual candles for everyone to hold during the Bible reading. Much like doing a candlelight service at your home.

Are You Ready To Try Doing A Christmas Family Worship Night?

While I still recommend attending a Christmas Service with your church family, doing one with your own household has been a special tradition that has brought joy into our home during this Christmas season. Do you have a tradition like ours? Are you ready to try doing something like this? Let me know in the comments!
